They work with FM to better understand the hazards that can impact their business continuity to make cost-effective risk management decisions, combining property loss prevention with insurance protection. The Natural Hazards and Climate Risk research group at FM is looking for a creative, self-motivated individual for a summer 2026 internship. Selected candidates will work alongside a unique group of scientists to protect the value of FM clients' businesses by developing methods to identify hazards, assess risk, and produce loss prevention solutions that are efficient and cost-effective. The internship will be supervised by senior staff in the research group and provides an opportunity to engage in solving real-world science and engineering problems in the insurance industry. As a future Research intern, you will be contributing to the Changing Climate research program by developing statistical models for assessing climate perils under future climate conditions. Responsibilities include data acquisition, downscaling of climate model output, and setup of experiments through a scientific programming approach. Qualifications: PhD students highly preferred, with good academic standing for graduation, Graduate students considered who are seeking to expand their research experience beyond academia and bring expertise in the following active research areas: Atmospheric and climate science Data science and scientific programming Strong analytical skills and s olid knowledge of probability and statistics Comfortable in Microsoft Windows and Linux environments Experience d with high-level programming language s such as MATLAB, R, Python Comfortable writing shell scripts and using APIs to automate workflows Proficiency in processing large volumes of data (incl. NetCDF , HDF, and GRIB formats) Excellent written and verbal communication skills Desired: GIS skills (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS , GDAL ) Experience in computer science, statistics, machine learning , deep learning Experience and understanding of climate model output (CMIP6, CORDEX , highresmip ) This is an in-office role based in Bellevue, WA . Candidates interested in our Norwood, MA, location, may also be considered. Temporary relocation support provided for selected qualified candidate.
