Job Description:
As an Optical Lamination Engineer at Meta, you will take a
critical role in developing future generation VR and AR optical
systems and products. You will be part of a team exploring new
concepts enabled through challenging optical lamination technology.
A fundamental understanding of materials and lamination methods
will be key to the success of our goals. We want people who work
well in teams, can brainstorm big ideas, work in new technology
areas, are able to drive a concept into a prototype and then mature
the design to high-volume consumer product solutions.We are looking
for someone with a productive mindset who can apply their optical
lamination and process development expertise to solve problems in
creative, insightful ways. Our ideal candidate has strong process
development skills, has successfully developed precision lamination
methods on optical systems, has fundamental knowledge of mechanical
and material properties, and experience manufacturing consumer
technology products.
Optical Lamination Engineer Responsibilities:
- Identify, explore, and enable novel fabrication processes,
technologies, materials and tools in the area of bonding,
lamination and heterogeneous integration needed to enable future
optical systems
- Design optical, lamination, and assembly fixturing and
tooling
- Develop basic manufacturing processes and build relationships
with development phase vendors
- Collaborate closely with technical program managers, leadership
team and other research scientists and engineers to devise and
execute on the program priorities
- Lead and collaborate with cross-functional team to draft
component specification, conduct design reviews, work with vendors
to manufacture parts and validate results by specifying test
parameters and methodologies
- Communicate and manage overseas component manufacturing
vendors
- Collaborate cross-functionally with operations, productization
and process engineering teams to deliver on research prototypes and
scale up including pilot scale ramp and technology transfer to
contract manufacturer
- Ability to travel internationally when required
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering,
Polymer Chemistry, Material Science, Optical Science, or
Equivalent
- 5+ years of hands-on development experience in soft-to-soft,
soft-to-hard, hard-to-hard lamination, 3D thermoforming lamination
for optical applications
- Experience with statistical quality control and process
capability analysis, Minitab, JMP, DOE principles, basic
statistical process control
- Experience in identifying reliability failure modes, and
providing solutions in the early stage of design life cycle
- Experience with metrology tools, including SEM, confocal,
interferometry, and/or others
- Experience with high-volume consumer electronics manufacturing,
partnering and managing Asia-based suppliers and contract
manufacturers
- Experience working with less supervision, driving hard decision
making
- Experience leading/delivering in cross-functional teams
- Must obtain work authorization in country of employment at the
time of hire, and maintain ongoing work authorization during
employment
Preferred Qualifications:
- PhD in Engineering, Polymer Chemistry, Material Science,
Optical Science, or Equivalent
- Experience in developing high volume display or touch sensor
components and products
- 3+ years of experience in leading edge semiconductor or display
fabrication leading module research and development in the area of
bonding, lamination or heterogeneous integration
- 3+ years experience in novel materials development and
integration for display applications
- Excellent communication skills
- Understanding of optics fundamentals, preferred in optical
simulation (LightTools, Zemax, etc.) and image processing.
Experience in LabVIEW and/or MATLAB programming
- Experience in at least one of the following CAD packages:
SolidWorks, Creo, NX
- Cleanroom experience
- Patent or publishing experience
