Job Description:

The Leading Edge Architecture Pathfinding (LEAP) team is seeking a self-motivated hardware engineer to work in a team of other hardware and software engineers to investigate and develop next generation optical connectivity to be deployed in Microsoft's Azure Cloud. As a principal member of this team, you will work directly with engineers across the company and industry suppliers for validation and qualification of optical engines and connectivity. Responsibilities will include developing requirements and specifications for connectivity solutions, and ensuring the solutions meet those requirements and specifications over the lifetime of their installation. This is an opportunity to leverage and grow your existing hardware engineering experience in a pioneering and highly cooperative environment where the results of your work will matter to Microsoft and its customers.



* BS/MS in Electrical Engineering or related field * 10+ years of relevant experience in optical connectivity or optical component solutions * Knowledge and experience with optical engines and connectivity * Experience developing specifications and test plans * Experience working across disciplines and organizations to resolve complex issues

Primary responsibilities include:

* Work with internal teams to define and specify optical engines and connectivity requirements * Support validation and compliance to the specifications * Support optical technology evaluation and proof of concept projects * Interact with external vendors and standards development organizations to influence product developments to align with Microsoft's requirements * Coordinate with hardware and software teams on implementation, testing and management * Develop new test procedures to validate and improve connectivity requirements * Collaborate to ensure systems meet significant quality, reliability and service level requirements for a cloud environment
