Job Description:

At Reality Labs Research (RL-R), our goal is to explore, innovate and design novel interfaces and hardware subsystems for the next generation of virtual, augmented, and mixed reality experiences. We are looking for a skilled and motivated Electrical Engineer to join our team, whose mission is to design, build, and test prototype electrical systems for future consumer VR and AR experiences. We are specifically looking for a candidate with a strong wireless system background. You'll design and specify the wireless system architecture, protocol and procedure fitting the future VR/AR research devices with stringent functional, quality, footprint and power requirements. Alongside you is a team of EE's, adjacent engineering disciplines, and research scientists to drive research efforts from proof-of-concepts to full wearable systems. The systems we work with could have ASICs, microcontrollers, microprocessors, FPGAs from simple to large, displays, audio, inertial sensors, haptic interfaces, image sensors, and high speed I/O. They will have the ability to work with a team of researchers with tolerance for a high degree of ambiguity. More broadly, the chosen candidate will work with a diverse and highly interdisciplinary team of researchers and engineers and will have access to cutting edge technology, resources, and testing facilities.

Electrical Engineer, Wireless, Research Responsibilities:

  • Set system performance for wireless subsystems and drive the wireless architecture (HW/SW) with other cross-functional teams achieving prototype performance optimization.
  • Interface and collaborate with wireless chipset vendors to ensure system requirements, such as RF/baseband performance, system control architecture, HW/SW interface architecture.
  • Research new technologies and analyze competition technologies, design new algorithms/protocols and specify solution options to solve complicated problems for future AR/VR products.
  • Analyze system performance issues and chipset/FW/SW defects, and improve broad system level performance during research device life-cycle.

    Minimum Qualifications:
    • BS in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
    • 5+ years electronics experience directly contributing to product design and manufacturing process, involving wireless interconnect (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC, GPS, mmWave systems).
    • Experience with wireless standards and design background for wireless products and circuitry including UWB, transmitters, and synthesizers.
    • Experience with Flexible Printed Circuits, and mechanical systems integration within a concurrent environment.
    • Experience with schematic and board layout using Cadence OrCAD, Altium or equivalent.
    • Experience with use of bench test equipment such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and function generators.
    • Experience with low and high speed digital communication interfaces such as I2C, SPI, UART, MIPI and USB SS.

      Preferred Qualifications:
      • Experience with the set-up and operation of complex RF test equipment required for hardware validation is preferred.
      • Familiarity with VR/AR systems or wearable technologies.
      • Experience in low power design and/or high thermally constrained designs.
      • Experience with PCBA and product level failure modes (production and field).
      • Experience with relating failure mode to process, material and design related stressors.
      • Experience specifying components and working with cross functional partners to ensure they meet spec/packaging requirements.
