Job Description:
Microsofts AI for Good Lab is seeking a highly skilled and
experienced Senior Director, Chief Economist – AI for Good Lab, to
lead our efforts in leveraging artificial intelligence to address
some of the worlds most pressing challenges. This role will involve
working closely with a multidisciplinary team of researchers,
engineers, and policy experts to develop and implement AI-driven
solutions that promote social good. A key responsibility will be
overseeing the Microsoft AI Economy Institute, a program designed
to advance the understanding of the economic impacts of AI and
inform action on building a robust, inclusive AI economy.

Required/minimum qualifications Doctorate in Data Science,
Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, Economics, Operations
Research, Computer Science, or related field AND 8 years
data-science experience (e.g., managing structured and unstructured
data, applying statistical techniques and reporting results) OR
Masters Degree in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics,
Econometrics, Economics, Operations Research, Computer Science, or
related field AND 10 years data-science experience (e.g., managing
structured and unstructured data, applying statistical techniques
and reporting results) OR Bachelors Degree in Data Science,
Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, Economics, Operations
Research, Computer Science, or related field AND 12 years
data-science experience (e.g., managing structured and unstructured
data, applying statistical techniques and reporting results) OR
equivalent experience. 5 years people-management experience. 5
years experience applying AI and machine learning techniques to
economic problems. Additional or preferred qualifications Doctorate
in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, Economics,
Operations Research, Computer Science, or related field AND 10
years data-science experience (e.g., managing structured and
unstructured data, applying statistical techniques and reporting
results) OR Masters Degree in Data Science, Mathematics,
Statistics, Econometrics, Economics, Operations Research, Computer
Science, or related field AND 12 years data-science experience
(e.g., managing structured and unstructured data, applying
statistical techniques and reporting results) OR Bachelors Degree
in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, Economics,
Operations Research, Computer Science, or related field AND 15
years data-science experience (e.g., managing structured and
unstructured data, applying statistical techniques and reporting
results) OR equivalent experience. 7 years people-management
experience. Deep understanding of the ethical considerations and
societal impacts of AI technologies. Proficient interpersonal and
communication skills. Ability to work effectively with diverse
teams and stakeholders. Publication record in top-tier economic and
AI journals. Experience working in or with non-profit
organizations, government agencies, or international organizations.
Familiarity with Microsofts AI technologies and platforms.
Demonstrated commitment to using technology for social good. Data
Science M6 - The typical base pay range for this role across the
U.S. is USD $163,000 - $296,400 per year. There is a different
range applicable to specific work locations, within the San
Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the
base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $220,800 -
$331,200 per year. Microsoft will accept applications for the role
until October 1, 2025. Responsibilities Strategic Leadership:
Provide visionary leadership and strategic direction for the AI for
Good Labs economic research initiatives. Develop and execute a
comprehensive strategy to harness AI for addressing global economic
challenges. Microsoft AI Economy Institute: Lead the Microsoft AI
Economy Institute, coordinating with scholars and researchers to
explore key questions about the future AI economy. Manage the
programs research agenda, workshops, and publication efforts
Research and Analysis: Lead and conduct cutting-edge economic
research using AI and machine learning techniques. Analyze complex
datasets to generate insights and inform policy recommendations.
Collaboration: Work collaboratively with internal and external
stakeholders, including academic institutions, non-profit
organizations, and government agencies, to drive impactful projects
and initiatives. Policy Development: Develop and advocate for
policies that promote the ethical and equitable use of AI in
addressing economic issues. Provide guidance on the economic
implications of AI technologies. Thought Leadership: Represent
Microsoft as a thought leader in the field of AI and economics.
Publish research findings in top-tier journals and present at
conferences and industry events. Team Management: Build and lead a
high-performing team of economists and data scientists. Foster a
culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous learning.
